Good news, bag news

4 08 2009

For anyone who missed the good news, since May 2006 until May this year, the UK’s leading supermarkets have cut the number of plastic carrier bags used by 48%.  According to the Waste and Resources Action Programme, this amounts to 4,740 tonnes being sent to landfill compared with 8,890 tonnes in May 2006. On the downside, in May 2009 alone, the number of single-use bags used by retailers stood at 450 million. A definite step in the right direction, however.
